The Department of Mathematics at College of Coastal Georgia offers a Bachelor's of Science degree in Mathematics with two tracks:
Pure/Applied Mathematics track, which prepares students for a career or graduate study.
Secondary Teacher certification, which prepares students to teach high school mathematics.
We also offer an associate degree program in pre-engineering and a minor in mathematics for students of any major.
While the study of mathematics already provides an intellectual challenge and
satisfaction to some, it is important to have a clear picture of the career
opportunities and nature of the work you will perform as a mathematician.
An undergraduate degree in mathematics at Coastal Georgia will prepare students
for a variety of careers by developing analytical and critical thinking skills
which are highly desirable in the job market.
Why College of Coastal Georgia?
We have a very robust course offering from a diverse group of faculty. Our faculty have a mixture of experience in careers and academia and come from very different mathematical backgrounds. Our faculty’s research interests run the gamut from pure mathematics areas (including algebra, analysis, number theory and topology) to applied mathematics areas (including statistics and mathematical modeling) to math education. Our math faculty have degrees in mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematics education, physics, operations research and engineering.
The math major courses offer small class sizes – generally around 10 – 15 students. This allows us to maintain close relationships between faculty and students. Students can easily get individualized help and attention (unlike at larger universities).
Our students outperform those at other schools. In their senior year, our students take the ETS major field test for Mathematics. Based on our student’s scores, we are in the top 4% among 339 domestic institutions which have participated in the test since 2004.
Our students have a 100% placement rate in jobs or graduate programs. Our recent graduates have gone on to Cerner Corporation (a global Health Care Information Technology company), University of Nevada at Reno, and Purdue University.
